Magic, clown capers, acrobatics, mimes... all that and much more can be found at the circus, an entire world packed with surprises and laughter for the enjoyment of kids and adults too. Today we shall be discussing the circus, festivals and the well-known circus companies.
Before we begin, we should take a quick look at the history. Because the circus is no recent invention. In fact, it goes back to the second half of the 18th century, at least in its modern form, because although there were circuses already in Roman times, it was a very different thing to what we have today, as it was based on chariot races. The inventor of the modern circus was the English horseman Philip Astley, who in 1770 built a circular open-air arena in London, where he exhibited his equestrian skills, interspersed with entertainment by tightrope-walkers, clowns and so on. In 1779 this arena became the first permanent circus: Astley's Royal Amphitheatre. Needless to say, since those days, the circus has changed radically. At first, circus companies all used the same permanent venue and most of them were based on equestrian performances. But little by little, they began to incorporate animal taming, clowns, magic shows, mime and trapeze artists... and from the end of the 19th century, the first travelling circuses were to be found in the United States.
Innovative CircusThe Cirque du Soleil is a circus company created over twenty years ago in Quebec, on the basis of a combination of spectacular acrobatics and juggling acts, stunning set decor and very unusual music, and it always avoids the use of animals in performances. The company has attained international renown and is made up of several hundred artists from many different countries. From the 17th of March to the 8th of May, it will be performing a show entitled 'Dralion' in Barcelona.
Circus, Clowns and SolidarityIn our country, one of the most famous circus companies is Circ Cric, founded in the early 1980's by the clown Tortell Poltrona, the stage name of Jaume Mateu Bullich. Following a performance by Tortell Poltrona in a Croatian refugee camp in 1993, the humanitarian organisation Clowns Without Borders was founded. One of the main objectives of the organisation is to promote solidarity and psychological care among the population of refugee camps, poor areas and conflict zones.
Circus FestivalsCircus festivals, which began to appear in the second half of the 20th century, bring together artists, people linked to the world of the circus and fans of circus arts. Nowadays, there are several circus festivals that are very well known: Monte-Carlo (Monaco), Budapest (Hungary), Stockholm (Sweden)... The Stockholm festival is aimed at female circus artists. In our country, we also have the Cornellà International Festival of Clowns and the Xirivella International Clown Fair.
