> The Aerial Voyage > Excitement Right Up to the Last Minute > Steve Fossett: Habitual Record-Breaker dimarts, 8 de març de 2005
On the 3rd of March, the North-American Steve Fossett reached a milestone in aviation history by becoming the first person to single-handedly fly around the globe non-stop, without even any refuelling stops. He piloted a single-engine ultra-light aircraft that was given the name Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer.
Fossett, a 60 year old millionaire, set out from Salina Airport, Kansas, on the 1st of March with the intention of flying around the world in eighty hours. Not only did the adventurer complete his aerial voyage, he even cut the expected time by around 13 hours. So the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer landed at Salina 67 hours, 2 minutes and 38 seconds after take-off, in other words almost 3 days later, and out of the aircraft climbed a Steve Fossett happy with his achievement, to be added to the list of adventures of a man who specialises in breaking world records. Fossett, who for most of the journey flew at a speed of 400 km per hour and a height of 15,000 metres, was met on the ground by thousands of fans eager for a close-up of one of the most eccentric adventurers of recent times and of the ultra-light in which he had flown around the world.
The Aerial VoyageOn his aerial voyage, Steve Fossett covered a distance of 37,000 km, equivalent to the length of the Tropic of Cancer, one of the two geographic parallels of the globe (the other is the Tropic of Capricorn). Fossett flew over the Atlantic Ocean, North Africa, Asia and the Pacific Ocean on board a specially designed and highly aerodynamic machine, i.e., it can more easily overcome wind resistance and thereby save on fuel.
Excitement Right Up to the Last Minute
+ The Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer landed 67 hours, 2 minutes and 38 seconds after take-off.
Even so, Steve Fossett's adventure almost went awry precisely because of a shortage of fuel. As he was flying over China, half of the way through his journey, his fuel reserves had really gone down, and Salina was still very far away. Luckily, between Japan and the Hawaiian archipelago, a tail wind helped Fossett to reach his destination.
Steve Fossett: Habitual Record-Breaker
+ In 2002 the adventurer became the first person to go around the world in an air balloon.
Steve Fossett really makes a habit of breaking world records. In fact, he has broken dozens of them, in no less than five different sports. One of his most well-known records occurred less than three years ago, when he became the first person to go around the world in an air balloon, non-stop and single-handedly. Just last year, aboard the catamaran Cheyenne, he captained the crew that sailed around the world in just 58 days, thereby setting a new world record.
