On 27th September, celebrations began for the 350th anniversary of the Taj Mahal, the most famous of mausoleums and one of the most beautiful monumental structures ever built. The celebrations will last for six months but they have started surrounded by controversy.
This has basically come about for two reasons. Firstly, due to the discrepancies which exist concerning the exact date when work was completed on the celebrated monument, the pride of the city of Agra, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Secondly, due to the decision of the Supreme Court of India not to lift the ban on visiting the Taj Mahal at night. With respect to the second reason, the government of Uttar Pradesh asked for the lifting of this ban, in force since 1984 for security reasons, with the argument that the reopening of the Taj Mahal after sunset would increase tourism and be a boost for business and the economy of the area. India's Supreme Court, however, denied the request and, in addition, refused permission for the holding of commemorative acts in the grounds, in order to protect the Taj Mahal from possible damage. The result is the millions of tourists and visitors who come to admire the Taj Mahal will not be able to contemplate the shining splendour and the magnificent tones which bathe it on the nights of a full moon.
Architectural MarvelThe Taj Mahal is a real architectural treasure, a work of art which deservedly figures on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Situated on the banks of the river Yamuna, the white marble mausoleum has a symmetry bordering on perfection and a harmonious synthesis of styles. It is an immense complex with gardens which took twenty years to complete and which required the labour of some twenty thousand workers. The construction materials, which were brought from different parts of India and Central Asia, included hundreds of kilos of gold and thousands of precious stones.
Symbol of LoveThe Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan ordered the Taj Mahal to be built in 1632. Why? Because of the love he professed for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died just after giving birth to his fourteenth child. Prostrated by the tragedy, Shah Jahan decided to honour the memory of Mumtaz Mahal with the construction of a large mausoleum, in which she was interred. On his death years later, the sultan's remains were laid to rest beside his loved one.
Anniversary? With all the solemnity of the celebrations for the anniversary of the Taj Mahal, not everyone agrees on the date when the mausoleum was finished. Some specialists maintain that it was not completed in 1654, but a decade before, at the end of 1643 or beginning of 1644; on the other hand, an inscription in the marble of the mausoleum indicates another date: 1647.
