> The Figures > Living on a Ship > Ocean Liners: Rivalry on the Atlantic dilluns, 12 de gener de 2004
The 12th January was a historic day for passenger shipping. The Queen Mary 2, the largest, longest and tallest ship, and with the greatest tonnage, that has ever been built was officially launched, setting off on a route that will take it across the Atlantic Ocean, departing from Southampton (Great Britain) and finally arriving at its destination of Fort Lauderdale (Florida, USA).
The Queen Mary 2 is a ship that offers a wide range of leisure activities and is equipped with every kind of luxury and comfort: five swimming pools, ten restaurants, discos, a museum of maritime history, an art gallery valued at five million dollars, a huge ballroom, a theatre seating 1,600 people, staterooms of between 18 to 209 square metres, most of them with their own balcony... All in all, it is truly spectacular, as indeed is the price, far beyond most people's pockets. This superb brand-new ship will sail under the British flag, but it is the property of the Cunard company, which is owned by the Carnival Corporation, headquartered in the city of Miami. As well as linking the East and West shores of the Atlantic, the Queen Mary 2 will also sail the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Eastern seaboard of North America.
The FiguresYou can get a rough idea of the spectacular nature of the Queen Mary 2 by taking a look at its main features. To start with, the dimensions of the ship are gigantic: 345 metres in length and 72 metres high, equivalent to a twenty-three storey building. It weighs 150,000 tonnes, the crew numbers 1,253, and there are 1,310 staterooms that can accommodate up to 2,620 passengers. With these figures, it won't surprise you that the ship, which can reach a maximum speed of 30 knots (55.56 Km/h), has 2,500 kilometres of electric cable, 3,000 telephones, 25,000 square metres of carpeting and 4,339 stairs.
Living on a ShipCan you imagine being able to always live at sea and travel the world in a super-luxury ship? Well, there are people that do. They are the small and select group of millionaires who permanently live aboard an ocean liner, the World, the most opulent and expensive in the world. The ship is owned by a Norwegian company, ResidenSea, and is a veritable floating city, with shops, restaurants, a theatre, a bookshop, a clinic, etc., and it also offers the chance to play sports such as tennis, golf and swimming. The itinerary taken by the World allows its privileged passengers (and residents) to attend different international events: the Carnival at Rio de Janeiro, the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Monaco, the Cannes Film Festival...
Ocean Liners: Rivalry on the AtlanticThe industrial revolution and the new steam engines led to the birth of the ocean liners in the first half of the 19th century. The first of these great ships to cross the Atlantic was the Sirius, which made the voyage from Cork (Ireland) to New York in eighteen days and ten hours, arriving at its destination on the 22nd April 1838. Four hours later, the Great Western anchored in New York harbour, having departed from the city of Bristol (UK) and made the voyage in only fourteen days and twelve hours. Ever since then, the great ocean liners have competed to sail from one Atlantic shore to another in as short a time as possible. Today, the speed record is still held by the liner named the United States, which in 1952 covered the distance between New York and Southampton in 3 days, 10 hours and 42 minutes.
