School Radio Broadcasts

The Language of Broadcasting

dijous, 19 de juny de 2003
More than one hundred years ago, on 14 May, 1897, the first wireless transmission was successfully made across the Bristol Channel (Great Britain). And yet the author of this revolutionary achievement that made the broadcast of radio waves in the form of signals possible was not British. He was the Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi. The event marked the birth of the radio, which in a very short time would change how people communicated all over the world and in our country as well.

Indeed, two years later, in 1899, Marconi established wireless telegraph service between France and Great Britain. In 1901, he claimed the first successful radio broadcast across the Atlantic Ocean
It was almost twenty-five years later that the revolutionary device reached our country. In 1924,
Radio Barcelona became the first radio station to broadcast in both our country and Spain. Nevertheless, the historical events that followed impeded broadcasts made solely in Catalan from normal development: following the Civil War, Franco's dictatorship cruelly repressed Catalan language and identity. Obviously radio would be no exception.

It would only be following 8 September, 1976, at the end of the dictatorship, when the Catalan language would be heard once again on air: Rądio Olot, which had begun broadcasting twenty-five years earlier on 8 September, made its debut broadcasts solely in Catalan. Shortly after, on 13 December, Rądio 4 began to follow suit.

From then on, radio in Catalan began to be heard loud and clear all over the country. And yet it faced two strong disadvantages: competition from other media, such as television in particular and, in recent years, the Internet, and competition from other radio programming in Spanish.

Catalunya Radio's Twentieth Anniversary

+ On 16 June, 1983, Catalunya Rądio began its broadcasts.
On 16 June, 1983, Catalunya Rądio, the first public radio station in Catalonia to broadcast in Catalan, began its broadcasts. However, it wasn't until four days later, on 20 June, when it was officially inaugurated. As time went on, Catalunya Rądio grew to be the station with the widest listening audience in the Principality, offering a wide variety of radio programming: news and entertainment, 'magazines', specialty programs…What's more, the news program El Matķ de Catalunya Rądio'currently is that with the widest listenership, with almost twice the audience that it’s closest competitor. In addition, the Catalunya Rądio Company has expanded in recent years with the incorporation of three additional channels: Catalunya Informació, which offers twenty-four hours of uninterrupted newscasts; Catalunya Mśsica, which broadcasts all styles of music, from Classical to Contemporary; and Catalunya Cultura, which focuses on topics relating to culture, as its name indicates.

School Radio Broadcasts

+ Radio broadcasting is a fun and entertaining way to develop the skills in speaking.
Are you interested in becoming a radio announcer? Well, actually it's not that hard to do. All you need is some motivation, just like a group of schools in the Principality had, as they have developed a variety of radio projects like those you will be able to see by clicking on the page named 'La Rądio a l'escola' (Radio at School), on the Edu365 educational portal. If you are interested, the XTEC Rądio program will show you all the steps you need to take, not just only to broadcast your own program, but also to upload it to the Internet. And you'll learn a ton of things to boot. Remember that radio broadcasting is a fun and entertaining way to develop your skills in speaking, reading, expressing yourself; diction, intonation, writing texts, organizing ideas and content…

The Language of Broadcasting

+ Language allows the transmitter to communicate with the receiver.
Human beings use language to communicate our feelings and emotions with one another. However there isn’t just one sole form of language. Quite the opposite, in fact each form of communication comes with its own language, and series of signs that are specific to it. The same goes for radio communication, where language allows the transmitter, in other words, the person doing the program, to communicate with the receiver, in other words, the listening audience. If you would like to become a good radio broadcaster, you have to keep in mind that radio language contains four basic elements: words, music, special effects and silence. Therefore, these four elements must be combined in a particular manner, depending on the type of radio program that is being made; creative, recreational, music or news.

QUE HO SABIES?

  • 'Bon dia, Catalunya!' It was with this daring greeting in Catalan that Salvador Escamilla began his radio program titled Rądio Scope, on Radio Barcelona, which among other things promoted the Nova Canēó (Catalan protest song). You are surely wondering why Escamilla's greeting was so daring. Well, it was because he was saying it in the middle of Franco's dictatorship, when the use of Catalan was something that was openly persecuted.
  • Over the course of its one-hundred year existence, radio has caused some unexpected effects. One of the most well-known was on 30 October 1938, when Orson Welles, who over time would become a famous films actor and director, had the thought to broadcast an adaptation of Herbert George Well's science-fiction novel 'The War of the Worlds' by way of a North American radio station. The novel tells of the invasion of our planet by extra-terrestrials from Mars. Well, it happened that listeners believed the Martian invasion to be real, which caused indescribable panic to spread over many American cities and towns.
