> Jacint Verdaguer, Poet and... Mountaineer > The 'Perils' of Cybercafes > Who was the First to Summit Everest?
dimarts, 25 de febrer de 2003
Tsering Gyalzen, a young Nepalese Sherpa is about to perform a singular feat: he's opening a cybercafe on Mount Everest at more than 5,000 meters of elevation. Gyalzen hopes to open the facility in March at the base camp, which is the departure point for expeditions to the world's highest peak.
What’s more, the young Nepalese plans to use the proceeds from the unique venture to reduce pollution in the area, which is full of trash left behind by the large numbers of would-be summiteers. Gyalzen is financing nearly half of the total cost of the cybercafe project, some 40,000 dollars. A handful of companies have offered to supply the necessary hardware. The news breaks only a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Everest by Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Coincidentally, Tsering Gyalzen’s grandfather participated as a Sherpa in the famous expedition that reached the crown of the world in 1953 and was directed by the British colonel John Hunt. It goes without saying that the cybercafe would be the world's highest. But that wouldn't stop the region's scholars from making the trek out. Surrounded by snow and glaciers, they'll use the facility to communicate via Internet to the rest of the world.
Jacint Verdaguer, Poet and... Mountaineer
+ Some contend Verdaguer climbed the Aneto.
Jacint Verdaguer was one of the most important poets of the 19th century Catalan literature, and has come to symbolize the Catalan Renaissance. With master works such as Canigó and L'Atlàntida, the author from Folgueroles (Osona) was pivotal to the consolidation of Catalan language and culture. Just last year, the Verdaguer Year commemorated the hundredth anniversary of the poet's death. However, Verdaguer was not merely a man of letters; he was also a great traveler and trekker. This double-identity is no contradiction: the Catalan Renaissance movement aimed to reclaim Catalan identity and this included expanding awareness of our geography. This is why Verdaguer, dressed in his priest's cassock, climbed the highest peak in the Pyrenees: the Aneto. Some contend that he was the first person in the country to do so.
The 'Perils' of Cybercafes
+ In China, authorities have closed down the majority of independent cybercafes.
Cybercafes have become all the rage in the last few years. These are locales that allow users to connect to the Internet, send emails and make use of all web-related services, while simultaneously offering the chance to have a bite or a cup of coffee without having to leave the premises. The now-ubiquitous cafes are a great boon for those who don’t have internet hook-ups at home. All this being said, such benefits are not favorably viewed in those countries where freedom is not a right for all citizens. In China, for example, a country with over a billion inhabitants, authorities have not only closed down the majority of independent cybercafes, but they have also prohibited access to Google, the Web's most popular search engine. It's patently clear that despite its detractors, the Internet is also a medium for freedom.
Who was the First to Summit Everest?
+ George Mallory, maybe the first to summit Everest.
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first summit of the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest, at 8,848 meters of altitude and located in the Himalayas. Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first to ascend to the world's ceiling in 1953, a feat that is hugely celebrated throughout the British dominion. However, the record is a matter of some debate: there are those who maintain that George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were the first to reach the summit in 1924. The discovery - now 4 years ago - of Mallory’s body less than 500 meters from the summit reopened the debate that they were the first to climb Chomolungma (the Mother Goddess of the Universe), the name given by the Tibetans to the mountain.
