> Marc Márquez, the second-youngest champion > Jorge Lorenzo, champion with a record number of points > Toni Elias, a prize for perseverance dimarts, 9 de novembre de 2010
For the first time ever, the three world motorcycle championships have been won by competitors from the Catalan Countries. Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) has claimed the title in the MotoGP category, Toni Elias (Honda) in Moto2, and Marc Márquez (Derbi) in the 125 cc category.
The triple victory was completed on Sunday by Márquez, who won the last Grand Prix of the season at the Xest circuit in Valencia. The exceptionally young rider showed incredible sang-froid as he weighed up his options: he gave up fighting for first place and ended up coming fourth (in order to win the championship he only had to come in the top eight). The previous week, at the Portugal Grand Prix, Márquez seemed to have decided the championship's outcome when, in an impressive display of skill, he took first position after having been last off the starting grid! The Valencian Nico Terol and the Catalan Pol Espargaró were also present on the 125 cc winners' podium, in second and third place, respectively. Marc Márquez, the second-youngest championWith his slight figure and at the tender age of seventeen, Marc Márquez became the youngest Catalan motorcycle champion and the second-youngest in history, after the Italian Loris Capirossi. He received his first motorbike when he was five years old; at six he was already taking part in enduro and motocross competitions, and by the age of twelve he had won the Catalan speed championship in the 125 cc category. Yesterday, his home town of Cervera, in Catalonia's Segarra region, paid him a well-deserved tribute.
Jorge Lorenzo, champion with a record number of pointsThis forthright Mallorcan, a faithful FC Barcelona supporter, is the new MotoGP world champion. Lorenzo won with 383 points, a figure never before achieved by a rider of a maximum capacity engine. Behind him came Dani Pedrosa with 245 points, winning him second place for the second time in MotoGP (the first time was in 2007), and Valentino Rossi, considered to be one of the best riders ever, with 233 points.
Toni Elias, a prize for perseveranceThe twenty-seven year-old from Manresa is the first-ever world champion of Moto2, the category which has replaced 250 cc. Friendly and easy to get on with, Elias has become champion ten years after making his debut in the world championship. His triumph is a testament to perseverance and humility: last year he left MotoGP, the most important category, to try his luck with Moto2. Next year he'll be back again with a champion's welcome.
