> Gamper i Wild: a Swiss and an Englishman > Josep Sunyol , the president who was shot > Núñez and Laporta: European glory dimarts, 29 de juny de 2010
On Thursday 1 July, Sandro Rosell will become president of FC Barcelona. Rosell is taking over from Joan Laporta, who has been in the post for the last seven years, since 2003. Sandro Rosell, who won the election comfortably, will be the 39th president of a club with over one hundred years of history, founded in 1899.
That year a dozen men met in a gym in Barcelona to set up Foot-Ball Club Barcelona. The meeting was sponsered by Hans Gamper, better known as Joan Gamper. Gamper exemplified two of the historic characteristics of Barça: a commitment to Catalonia and a universal commitment. Although the founder of the club was not Catalan (he was Swiss) he succeeded in multiplying the club's fans by strongly linking it to Barcelona and to the whole of Catalonia. This double Catalan-universal characteristic has continued up until the present day. FC Barcelona is a great symbol of 'Catalanness', but it is also a sporting institution with a huge international profile, with fans spread all over the world.
Gamper i Wild: a Swiss and an EnglishmanJoan Gamper was a founder, player and president of FC Barcelona over five different periods of time, from 1908 to 1925. He consolidated the club, which had been about to disappear, and was the driving force behind the construction of the Les Corts ground, the club's home until Camp Nou was inaugurated in 1957. Strangely, Gamper was not the club's first president. That honour fell to Walter Wild, the club's oldest founding member. An Englishman, Wild combined his role as president with that of playing for the club.
Josep Sunyol , the president who was shot
+ Josep Sunyol was shot by Franco's troops in August 1936.
When the Spanish Civil War broke out, the club was chaired by Josep Sunyol, a businessman and a member of parliament for the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (Republican Left of Catalonia) in Madrid. In August 1936, during a visit to republican troops stationed in the Sierra de Guadarrama near Madrid, the car in which Sunyol was travelling mistakenly entered territory controlled by the pro-Franco army. The car was stopped, and Sunyol and his two companions were shot without a trial. Sàpiens, the Catalan magazine, has this year begun to search for the remains of the martyred president, although to date, they have not been identified.
Núñez and Laporta: European gloryOf the 38 chairmen that Barça have had, Josep Lluís Núñez was the longest serving (1978 to 2000). Amongst other titles with Núñez as president, FC Barcelona won seven La Liga titles, four European Cup Winners' Cups and the coveted Champions League (1992). However, in sporting terms, the most successful presidency has been that of Joan Laporta who, in just seven years, has seen the club lift four La Liga cups, two Champions League cups (2006 and 2009), and the Club World Cup (2009), the only trophy that was lacking from the club's trophy cabinet.
