> The megalopolis of Shanghai > China, an emerging power > Barcelona, home to the 1888 and 1929 World Expos dimarts, 27 d'abril de 2010
Shanghai, China's most populous city, is about to inaugurate a great event: the 2010 World Expo, which will run for six months, from 1 May to 31 October.
The aim of World Expos is to present to the world the great advances made by humanity in different areas. These global events act as platforms for scientific, cultural, economic and technological exchange. Having said that, we should clarify that there are two kinds of exhibitions: World Expos and International Expos, both of which are regulated by the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE). While World Expos take place in an unlimited area where the participating countries construct their own pavilions, International Expos are held on a smaller, 25-hectare site, last three months (half the length of World Expos) and focus on a specific theme. The Expo 2010 Shanghai is a World Expo and its theme is 'Better City, Better Life' by which it aims to highlight the need to make cities more habitable, with a better quality of life. The world's population is increasingly concentrated in cities: in 1950, 29% lived in cities; today, the figure stands at almost 55%. The Expo 2010 Shanghai is expected to be the most-visited in the history of these events. Some 200 countries and international organisations will be represented and visitor numbers are expected to reach 70 million, coming both from China and other countries.
The megalopolis of ShanghaiLocated on the Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai is China's most populous city, as well as being one of the most populous in the world, with some 20 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. Since the 1980s, it has enjoyed phenomenal economic growth and nowadays is one of the most important ports and commercial hubs in the Far East, even ahead of China's capital, Beijing. Shanghai is synonymous with China's great economic transformation.
China, an emerging power
+ Chinese flag.
Today China is an emerging power, with over 1.3 billion inhabitants, which is more than any other country. The Expo 2010 Shanghai and the Beijing Olympics in 2008 are proof of China's increasing importance in the international arena. However, the great transformation of the Chinese economy has not been accompanied by political reform. The Communist Party of China rules the country with an iron fist and the lack of freedoms is repeatedly denounced by human rights organisations.
Barcelona, home to the 1888 and 1929 World ExposBarcelona has organised one World Expo and one International Expo. The first, in 1888, led to the development of the former Ciutadella fortress, which was converted into a park. Then, in 1929, the mountain of Montjuïc area was developed. Both events were exhibitions of merchandise.
