This Friday, 16 April, sees the premiere here of one of the most eagerly-awaited films of the year: 'Alice in Wonderland', by the American film director Tim Burton.
The film is inspired by the hugely famous book of the same name by the English writer Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), along with its lesser-known sequel, 'Through the Looking-Glass', published six years later, in 1871. The cast includes well-known actors, such as Stephen Fry, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Johnny Depp, who plays the role of the Mad Hatter. Alice is played by the Australian actress Mia Wasikowska. Burton's film portrays a 19-year old Alice, who returns to the magic universe she knew when she was a little girl. There she is reunited with her old friends (the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and company) as she seeks to find her own destiny and to end the Red Queen's reign of terror. 'Alice in Wonderland' premiered at the beginning of March in a number of countries (Australia, Great Britain, and the United States) and is already the biggest box office hit of 2010. 3D technologyAn added attraction of this new film version of 'Alice' (which combines real people and animated characters) is the fact that it incorporates 3D technology, allowing viewers to watch it in three dimensions. 3D fever took off last year with the release of James Cameron's 'Avatar', and is about to make the transition from cinema to television. Leading manufacturers like Sony, Samsung and Panasonic have been developing their own 3D TVs over recent months.
A children’s literature classicPublished in 1865, 'Alice in Wonderland' is one of the most popular children's books of all time. The story begins when Alice falls down a rabbit hole and enters a fantasy world, a wonderland where everything is possible, unlike the real world. The novel does not moralise or try to instruct children as to what they should or should not do. In fact, it is seen as a satire on social conventions and the hypocrisy of adults (which explains why youngsters identify so strongly with it).
Famous charactersBesides Alice, the novel is populated by characters that have become famous: the White Rabbit (who is in such a hurry he never has time to talk), the Mad Hatter (crazy, eccentric and fickle, but good-hearted), the Cheshire Cat (mischievous and sarcastic, who is there one minute and gone the next), and the tyrannical Queen of Hearts (very bad tempered, and ready to order anyone who dares to offend her to be beheaded, even for the slightest offence).
