> Michael Schumacher: return of a legend > The Catalan drivers: Pedro de la Rosa... > ... and Jaume Alguersuari dimarts, 9 de març de 2010
This Sunday, 14 March, the first Formula 1 World Championship race of the season will be held in the island state of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. The world championship is the most widely covered motor-racing competition in the world and is followed by hundreds of millions of viewers.
Twenty-four drivers (two from each of the teams taking part) will line up on the starting grid in one of the most open and interesting world championships of recent years. Ferrari, the most legendary racing team, has signed the Spanish twice world champion Fernando Alonso, who will drive alongside the Brazilian Felipe Massa, the 2008 runner-up. Jenson Button, the reigning champion, has joined McLaren, where his teammate will be fellow Englishman Lewis Hamilton, who, in 2008, aged 22, became the youngest champion in the history of Formula 1. However, the biggest item of news this year is the return of the German driver Michael Schumacher, one of the great Formula 1 legends, who retired from the sport three years ago. Added to this is the new rule banning the refuelling of cars during the race. Drivers will be able to stop to change tyres, but not to fill their fuel tanks.
Michael Schumacher: return of a legend
+ Statistically speaking, Michael Schumacher is the best Formula 1 driver in history.
Statistically speaking, Michael Schumacher is the best Formula 1 driver in history. He has won more world championships than any other driver: seven (five of which were consecutive), ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio (five) and Alain Prost (four). Between 1991 and 2006, Schumacher won 91 races and climbed the podium 154 times. He will be looking to boost these spectacular figures while driving for Mercedes GP.
The Catalan drivers: Pedro de la Rosa...
+ Pedro de la Rosa is an experienced driver.
After Schumacher, the second most-veteran driver in the world championships is the Catalan Pedro Martínez de la Rosa, who made his debut in 1999. Aged 39, De la Rosa is an experienced driver who knows each of the circuits inside out: he was a test driver for one of the key teams, McLaren, for many years. This year he will be driving for BMW Sauber and battling it out for points (awarded to the first ten finishers).
... and Jaume Alguersuari
+ In 2009, Jaume Alguersuari became the youngest ever Formula 1 driver.
Another Catalan driver after points will be Jaume Alguersuari, who, last year, became the youngest driver to make his Formula 1 debut, aged 19 years, 125 days. His first race was after the start of the season, so this year will be his first full Formula 1 year. During the pre-season races, Alguersuari made good times driving for Toro Rosso, the same team he drove for last year when he made his debut.
