> Classified according to the type of threat > A small sample > Combating climate change dimarts, 2 de febrer de 2010
The Danish company Co+Life has launched an initiative called '100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear' aimed at raising social awareness of climate change: a change that experts say is undeniable.
By means of photographs, '100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear' documents 100 places that are in danger of disappearing or of undergoing drastic change on account of global warming. The 100 places were chosen taking into account reports produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the leading authority in the field of climate change that was set up by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization in 1988. The 100 photographs, taken by some of the best-known photographers in the world, can be seen on the Internet by visiting the website specially set up by Co+Life. The website also features a video and additional information about each of the places under threat. Besides being available online, '100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear' has also been published as a book and featured in exhibitions, calendars and television advertisements. Classified according to the type of threatThe places named by Co+Life all appear on an interactive map and are also grouped according to the kind of threat they face: rising sea levels, rising temperatures, desertification, melting of glaciers, decreased precipitation, extreme weather events, etc. We can see, for example, that rising sea levels are threatening The Battery (the southernmost part of Manhattan Island in New York), Venice (perhaps the most beautiful city in the world) and the deltas of the Indus, Nile, Niger and Mississippi rivers, amongst other places.
A small sampleThe list includes other places that are of cultural, scenic or environmental significance, such as Nunavut, an autonomous territory in Canada populated by the Inuit, whose identity and traditions are under threat because of melting ice; the Amazon rainforest, known as the 'lungs of the Earth', which has been diminishing over recent years; Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, which is expected to lose its snow cap within ten years; and the Great Barrier Reef, the world's most important coral ecosystem, which is under threat from rising sea temperatures.
Combating climate change
+ Awareness of the need to combat climate change has increased over recent years.
By way of a response, the '100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear' website also includes a list of 100 different ways to combat climate change. In fact, awareness of the need to combat climate change has increased substantially over recent years as a result of reports from experts. For example, the last IPCC report, from 2007, said there could be no mistake about climate change and that most of the increase in the Earth's temperature since the mid-20th century was almost certainly due to greater concentrations of greenhouse gases caused by human activity. However, the UN's Conference on Climate Change, held less than two months ago, produced only limited results.
