> New features > Rivals > The operating systems market dimarts, 20 d'octubre de 2009
The day after tomorrow, 22 October, sees the launch of Windows 7, the new operating system from Microsoft, the company founded by Bill Gates.
Windows 7 arrives less than three years after the launch of Windows Vista, the operating system preceding Windows 7. Vista did not have anywhere near the success it was expected to have. It is believed that many new computer buyers uninstalled Windows Vista and opted for the older but more reliable Windows XP, launched in 2001. Microsoft insists that Windows 7 is a fast, simple and easy-to-use operating system. Forecasts estimate that sales of Windows 7 will reach 177 million by the end of 2010, 50 million of which will be in Europe. Microsoft is to launch different versions of Windows 7 onto the market. The most common will be Home Premium, which will sell for $120 in the United States.
New featuresThe desktop of Windows 7 is dynamic and attractively designed, with larger icons than those used on earlier versions. The new operating system (which re-starts more quickly) incorporates new features, including HomeGroup, which allows two or more home computers to share music, images and photographs, and Windows Touch, which makes it easier for users to browse the Internet using their fingertips instead of a mouse (providing they have a touchscreen monitor).
RivalsWindows 7 is set to rival the new operating system released by Apple: Mac OS X Snow Leopard, launched less than two months ago. As for Microsoft's great rival Google, it is planning to launch its own operating system in the second half of 2010. It will be called Google Chrome OS and will an open source system. Google is aiming for its operating system to be fast, simple and safe.
The operating systems market
+ Windows comfortably dominates the operating system market.
It has been said that the success or failure of Windows 7 will determine the future of Microsoft. Whatever happens, the fact remains that Microsoft still comfortably dominates the operating system market. According to data from Net Applications, Windows has a market share of 92.77%; Apple's Mac has 5.12%; and the open source Linux has almost 1%.
