> Eto'o and Inter's big challenge > The name Internazionale > Inter-Milan rivalry dimarts, 15 de setembre de 2009
This week sees the first round matches in the Champions League. As luck, ever capricious, would have it, two of Europe's most prestigious clubs, FC Barcelona and Internazionale Milano (better known as Inter), are in the same group.
The match between Inter and Barça will be played in Milan on Wednesday at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, with a capacity of 80,000 spectators. The two sides will meet again on 24 November at the Camp Nou. The match will be a closely fought contest. FC Barcelona are the Champions League title holders, whilst Inter have won the last four Italian league titles. However, besides its purely sporting aspect, the encounter will be an emotionally charged event. Samuel Eto'o, one of the best strikers in Barça's history, was signed by Inter during the summer. In exchange, Barça signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who shined during the last three seasons at Inter. Former Inter player Scherer Maxwell is another new signing for Barça. An additional attraction of the match is the presence of José Mourinho on the Inter bench. Between 2004 and 2007 Mourinho trained Chelsea, at a time when they played some fiercely fought matches against FC Barcelona in the Champions League.
Eto'o and Inter's big challengeWhilst Eto'o was at Barça they won two Champions League titles, in 2006 and 2009. The great challenge for the Cameroon striker is to help Inter win the Champions League title (the most important club competition in Europe). Inter have won it twice before, although both victories were more than 40 years ago: in 1964 and 1965. Two players with successful careers at Barça played an important role in those wins: midfielder Luis Suárez and coach Helenio Herrera, also known as 'il Mago' (the Wizard).
The name InternazionaleInter is a historic club founded more than 100 years ago, in 1908. On 9 March that year, a breakaway group of men from the Milan Cricket and Football Club (today known as AC Milan) decided to set up a new club. The founders wanted the new club to accept not just Italian players, but also players from outside Italy (in fact, the first captain was Swiss). That was why the club was given the name Internazionale.
Inter-Milan rivalryInter began, therefore, as a breakaway club from AC Milan. The rivalry between the two clubs in the city of Milan is one of the most intense in Italian football. Historically, Inter has had more followers amongst the city's middle classes whilst AC Milan's fans have come from working class backgrounds or are immigrants from southern Italy. Having said that, Silvio Berlusconi, one of the country's richest men and the current prime minister of Italy, has owned AC Milan for more than 20 years.
