Barcelona's International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art, better known as Sonar, will take place from 18-20 June. This will be the 16th time the Catalan capital hosts the festival, which has become one of the leading shows in the world for innovative musical and artistic trends.
This year's Sonar includes more than 70 concerts featuring 283 performers from 27 countries. As in previous years, the festival has a day programme and a night programme: Sonar by Day and Sonar by Night. Sonar by Day will be held at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), whilst the Fira de Barcelona complex on Gran Via will be the setting for Sonar by Night. True to its principles, Sonar will this year feature emerging talents as well as highly acclaimed, renowned artists. A few of the names in Sonar 2009Amongst the new talents are the electropop duo La Roux and the up-and-coming pop vocalist Ebony Bones. Alongside these newcomers will be groups like Orbital, one of the classic groups of electronic music. The Jamaican-born singer Grace Jones is the most legendary figure to perform in this year's festival. Last year this sophisticated pop icon released her CD 'Hurricane', her first in almost twenty years.
Sonar Kids...
+ Sonar Kids will take place on 21 June.
The organisers of Sonar 2009 wanted to create a new festival with children in mind, one that would allow them to enjoy the latest in musical and artistic trends. Sonar Kids, as it is known, will take place on 21 June and will feature leading artists from here and abroad, who will use their inventiveness and talent to stimulate the children's creativity. Artists taking part in Sonar Kids include the French DJ Laurent Garnier, the German hip-hop puppet group Puppetmastaz, the musician and singer Miqui Puig, and the artist and illustrator Jordi Labanda.
...for younger kidsThe programme for Sonar Kids is very diverse and includes a workshop for learning about the trade secrets of disc jockeys, breakdance classes, skating workshop, and a beatboxing workshop (beatboxing is the art of using the voice to mimic musical instruments). There will also be an area with more than 30,000 pieces of Lego, where children can make whichever building or figure they please.
