The 'resurrection' of Sherlock Holmes

dimarts, 19 de maig de 2009
This Friday, 22 May, will be the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Scottish writer Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), creator of one of the most celebrated detectives in literature: Sherlock Holmes.

Born in 1859 in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, into a catholic family of Irish roots, Arthur Conan Doyle went to a Jesuit school before going on to study medicine, a profession he practiced until 1891.

That year his life changed dramatically after he decided to dedicate himself fully to writing. His literary output includes historical novels, plays, poetry, war chronicles as well as his memoirs, entitled 'Memories and Adventures' (1924).

However, what catapulted Conan Doyle to worldwide fame was the creation of Sherlock Holmes, the main character in four novels and 56 short stories. Holmes first appeared in 'A Study in Scarlet', published in 1887.

The character of Holmes, considered to be the first whose methods were science-based, contrasts with the fascination Conan Doyle had for paranormal phenomena. After the death of his son Kingsley in the First World War (1914-1918), the author became a fierce defender of spiritualism, a doctrine that claims it is possible to communicate with the spirits of the dead by means of a medium.

Ironic, ingenious, logical. That describes Sherlock Holmes, a thinly built man, and an inveterate pipe smoker with a great capacity for scientific reasoning, a gift that enables him to get to the bottom of the most intricate mysteries, often based on apparently insignificant details. Conan Doyle based his character on his professor: Dr Joseph Bell, an astute observer and able to diagnose patients with little more than a glance.

Holmes and Dr Watson

+ Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes, by Sidney Paget.
Holmes is accompanied in his investigations by his great friend, Dr Watson, who is an ideal counterpoint to Holmes. Kind, clumsy and a touch obtuse, Watson is full of humanity - a trait that tempers the lack of emotion of Holmes, who is inexpressive, cold and inaccessible. It is Holmes himself who gave the best eulogy of Watson: he was not an illuminated man, he did not shine with his own light; but he was a bearer of light.

However, if Watson is Holmes' faithful friend, Professor Moriarty, an expert mathematician, is sworn enemy. 'The Final Problem', (1893), ends with the death, or so it would appear, of Sherlock Holmes, after a violent struggle with Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. The disappearance of Holmes was profoundly displeasing to Conan Doyle's readers, so much so that he was forced to 'resurrect' Holmes. The writer continued writing stories about the famous detective until 1927.

QUE HO SABIES?

  • The famous phrase 'Elementary, my dear Watson', attributed to Holmes, does not appear in any of Conan Doyle's writings.
  • Besides being intelligent, Sherlock Holmes is also talented artistically: he plays the violin, often at untimely hours.
