> Bayern: a Legendary Club with a Futuristic Stadium > The Free State of Bavaria… > …an Economic Power dimarts, 31 de març de 2009
Next week will see first-leg matches in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, the most important competition in European club football. One of the stellar matches will be the one that pits FC Barcelona against Bayern Munich.
This qualifying-round match is expected to be fiercely disputed. Barcelona is first in La Liga and their game is praised by everyone. But Bayern is a team of fighters who are difficult to beat and have never been beaten by the Catalan side in a European competition. What's more, they eliminated Sporting Lisbon with a convincing 12-1 aggregate in the last round of competition at the beginning of March. Barcelona and Bayern Munich are two legendary, classic European football teams, making this qualifier even more interesting. Barcelona has won the Champions League twice, while Bayern has four victories to its name, including three in a row (1974, 1975 and 1976). Franz Beckenbauer, one of the best players of all times and the current chairman of Bayern, played a pivotal role in all three wins. Barça and Bayern are both rich clubs with century-old traditions and more than 100,000 members each. They are also both sporting symbols of territories with their own identity: Catalonia and Bavaria, respectively.
Bayern: a Legendary Club with a Futuristic StadiumFounded in 1900 (a year after Barça), Bayern Munich is a much-laurelled club: they have won 21 German league titles and 14 league cups, the Champions League four times, and the Intercontinental Cup twice. Since 2005 the team has played at the futuristic Allianz Arena in Munich, which has a capacity of nearly 70,000 spectators. When there is a match, the arena is lit up in red, the team's colour.
The Free State of Bavaria…Bayern Munich's crest incorporates the flag of Bavaria, a territory located in the heart of Europe, between the Alps and the Rhön Mountains, and the Main and Danube rivers. Bavaria is the largest 'land' (state) in Germany, a country which has a federal tradition. Bavaria was a powerful duchy in the Middle Ages, and now has the particular characteristic of being defined as a 'free state' by its constitution. Its population is more than 12 million and its most important city is Munich, the capital. However, it also has other important cities including Nuremberg, Augsburg, Regensburg and Bamberg, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
…an Economic PowerAlthough essentially rural 50 years ago, nowadays Bavaria is Germany's most prosperous 'land', with a very powerful economy that gives great importance to new technologies. The territory is home to companies known throughout the world: Audi and BMW, from the automotive industry; Siemens, energy and telecommunications; Allianz, insurance; and Adidas and Puma, sporting goods.
