Fair Play and the Olympic Spirit

An Award for Fair Play

The Example set by Nadal and Federer

dimarts, 10 de febrer de 2009
Respect for the rules of the game, proper behaviour towards opponents, refusal to pursue victory at any price, good manners and dignity (both in victory and defeat), these are some of the practices that define so-called 'fair play'.

Usually, 'fair play' is used as a synonym for 'sportsmanship'. It should be said that fair play is not exclusive to sports. Or at least, it should not be. Loyalty, respect, nobility and humility… all these values are not only essential in playing sports, but also in all areas of life. Basically, they are essential to get on in life.

However, this does not mean that sports are not an important way of learning and fully taking on the values of fair play. After all, a lot of children and young people practice one sport or another.

Therefore, it is no wonder that a lot of people stress the importance of fair play in the sporting arena. It is worth remembering, indeed, that many athletes decide to take up sports professionally at very early ages, when they are still young.

Fair Play and the Olympic Spirit

+ Fair play is one of the pillars of the Olympic spirit.
In fact, fair play is one of the pillars of the so-called Olympic spirit, defined by the French educator Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937), one of the leading figures behind the modern Olympic Games. As the Olympic Charter says, the Olympic spirit proposes a lifestyle based on the joy of effort, the value of a good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles. This is in line with the Olympic creed: 'The most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.'

An Award for Fair Play

+ In 2007, FC Barcelona received the FIFA Fair Play award.
For 20 years now, FIFA (the International Federation of Association Football) gives its Fair Play award in recognition of those individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to promoting sportsmanship in football. The first Fair Play award was given to fans of the Scottish team Dundee United, whilst the most recent award (not even a month ago) went to the national football associations of Armenia and Turkey for encouraging dialogue between the two countries. The 2007 winner was FC Barcelona for its commitment to humanitarian causes and to programmes promoting the welfare of children throughout the world (the most visible sign of this commitment is the UNICEF logo on players' shirts).

The Example set by Nadal and Federer

+ Roger Federer and Rafel Nadal.
Sporting rivalry should never exclude fair play, as tennis players Rafel Nadal and Roger Federer know well enough. The current world number one and two have played seven Grand Slam tournament finals (three at Roland Garros, three at Wimbledon and one at the Australian Open), behaving impeccably and with mutual respect in all of them. Their most recent final, the Australian Open, just over a week ago, was followed by an emotionally charged awards ceremony: Federer, shattered and tearful after losing the match was consoled and encouraged by Nadal who barely celebrated his victory out of respect for his opponent.

QUE HO SABIES?

  • In 1990, the FIFA Fair Play award went to the former FC Barcelona and England player Gary Lineker, after 12 years in the game without a single red or yellow card.
  • In Ancient Greece, the Olympic Games were preceded by the so-called 'sacred truce', which put an end to all hostilities and to all wars between Greeks (if there were any, of course).
  • Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of modern Olympics, believed that a proper education should not exclude sporting activities, a belief that led him to introduce physical education into schools.
