> Six refreshment points over 83 km > Tips > A country with a tradition of hiking dijous, 18 de setembre de 2008
The Matagalls-Montserrat Endurance Trail, the country's most popular long-distance walk, takes place this weekend. The walk starts at Coll Formic (1,145 m), at the foot of the Matagalls peak, in the Montseny Massif, and ends at the Abbey of Montserrat (709 m). The objective of the 3000 participants is to complete the 83.3 km path in less than 24 hours.
The Matagalls-Montserrat Endurance Trail is, therefore, a very tough test that demands good physical preparation. Last year, for example, 2,847 walkers set off from Coll Formic, of which 1,924 (67.6%) reached the destination in the designated time. The remainder abandoned the walk along the way. However, the hike is becoming increasingly popular. Enrolment closed some time ago and the organisers have had to start a waiting list for the first time in the event's history. Organised by the Club Excursionista de Gràcia, the Matagalls-Montserrat Endurance Trail first took place in 1972, becoming an annual event in 1989 after years of having taken place every two years. During the first years, participants set off from Matagalls peak itself although, since 1998, the starting point has been Coll Formic. This change was brought about to preserve the Matagalls environment and to avoid damage to the ground and vegetation caused by the presence of so many people in such a short space of time, according to studies undertaken by the National Parks Service of Barcelona District Council.
Six refreshment points over 83 kmDeparture for walkers taking part in the Matagalls-Montserrat Endurance Trail is spread out at intervals between 5.30pm and 7.15pm on Saturday, with some 30 walkers setting off every minute. The trail, which follows mountain paths, has six refreshment points where participants can boost their energy with a range of foodstuffs (sandwiches, biscuits, quince, nuts and dried fruit, etc.) and drinks (such as water, tea, coffee, soup and drinking yoghurt).
Tips
+ A good part of the walk is done at night.
Although the refreshment points are provided throughout the route, the organisers recommend walkers take a backpack with their own food and drink, along with warm clothing as it can get chilly at night. A good part of the walk is done at night so it is very important to have a head lamp or, if not, a torch, even though the route is signposted with a symbol comprising two parallel green and red lines with (in some places) a white circle in the middle.
A country with a tradition of hiking
+ A fondness for hiking emerged during the Renaixença.
The Matagalls-Montserrat was established in honour of Jaume Oliveres (1877-1957), a priest who was a climbing pioneer in the Catalan Countries and who was the first to walk the trail in August 1904. A fondness for hiking emerged some decades earlier, during the Renaixença, a movement aimed at recovering the Catalan language and its literature. The Renaixença fostered a desire to explore every part of the geography of the country.
