Who Will Be Footballer of the Year?

Favourites: Kaká...

...and Messi

The Most International Golden Ball

dimarts, 16 d'octubre de 2007
Last week saw the publication of the list of candidates to be named FIFA World Player, the highest accolade in the footballing world. Thirty names are in the running for the award, which also includes a second and third place.

The select list was drawn up by various groups of experts at the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), football's international governing body. Now it's the turn of coaches and captains of the national sides to choose their three favourite players, on the condition that they are not of the same nationality. A vote count will decide the winner.

This year, FC Barcelona is the club with the highest number of nominees with seven players put forward (Deco, Eto'o, Henry, Márquez, Messi, Ronaldinho and Thuram), followed by five from Chelsea (Cech, Drogba, Essien, Lampard and Terry) and four from AC Milan (Gattuso, Kaká, Nesta and Pirlo). In terms of countries, Italy has five players on the shortlist, France has four, and Brazil and Argentina three each.

Although men's football enjoys wider media coverage than women's football, FIFA also runs an award for women, with last year's winner being the Brazilian player Marta Vieira da Silva. Winners of both awards will be announced on 17 December at a ceremony to be held in the Swiss city of Zurich.

Favourites: Kaká...

+ Kaká scored ten goals for Milan in the Champions League.
Betting shops and sports analysts share the view that this year's favourite is the Brazilian player Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, better known as 'Kaká'. The case to give the award to Kaká (an elegant player with an exquisite technique) is a strong one: victory by his team, AC Milan, who beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Champions League. The Milan player, who is not a forward but a midfielder, was the team's highest scorer with ten goals to his name. His brilliant performance at the highest level of European football eclipses his absence from the Brazilian squad selected for the America Cup in July this year.

...and Messi

+ Messi is gifted with an insight of the game, dribbling skills and great speed.
The Argentinean player Leo Messi is one of Kaká's great rivals for the award, especially after the sensational start he has made with FC Barcelona this season. Gifted with an insight of the game, dribbling skills and great speed (qualities that overwhelm defenders) Messi is seen as the natural successor to Ronaldinho, the best player in the world in recent years. Compared with his fellow countryman Diego Armando Maradona, considered to be one of the best players of all time, he did not win a single significant title with Barça last season, a factor that limits his chances of being nominated FIFA World Player, even though he did play in the America Cup final with Argentina.

The Most International Golden Ball

+ France Football magazine has been awarding the prize since 1956.
Older and just as prestigious, if not more so, than the FIFA World Player award is the Ballon d'Or (Golden Ball) award made by France Football magazine. Juries made up of specialised journalists have been awarding the prize since 1956. Until now, the Golden Ball award has been given to the best footballer playing in Europe. This year, however, as the award becomes more international, the jury will choose the best player in the world, whether they play in European leagues or not. The list of 50 candidates will be released on 23 October and the winner announced on 2 December. Like the FIFA World Player awards, favourites include Kaká, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, from Manchester United, the reigning English league champion.
