In January 2006, the US cable TV channel Disney Channel showed the made-for-television film 'High School Musical' which, since then, has become an absolute phenomenon amongst youngsters in the United States and, also, throughout the world. Its sequel, 'High School Musical 2' (which Disney Channel released in our country on 29 September) has consolidated the phenomenon.

The US premiere of 'High School Musical 2', on 17 August, attracted an audience of 17.2 million, the highest figure ever in the history of cable in the US. The sound track to the original film was the best-selling album of 2006 with sales of more than 3.7 million.

However, as we said earlier, the phenomenon is far from being limited to the US. The first version of the TV musical has been seen by more than 200 million viewers in a hundred countries and has sparked an intensive marketing campaign selling DVDs, books and videogames, and promoting concerts, etc.

People are even talking about a new instalment of the saga that could be shown next year…destined for cinema release!

Main Characters

'High School Musical' is about the adventures and misfortunes of a group of youngsters who attend East High. The main characters are Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez, played by Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens, respectively. Troy's best friend is Chad Danforth, while the intelligent Gabriella is great friends with Taylor McKessie, the decathlon captain. Then there's Ryan Evans and his twin sister Sharpay (who could not be more arrogant), undisputed star of the school shows until Troy and Gabriella decide to team up together.

'High School Musical 2'

The setting for the sequel moves away from the school to the Lava Springs Club, owned by the Evans family. Sharpay, who has learnt her lesson and does not want anyone to steal the limelight, starts to pursue Troy, who sees how his friendship with the Evans family opens up a world of possibilities. Troy is torn between the advantages of becoming friends with the Evanses and his own friends, starting with Gabriella, who is head-over-heels in love with him.

In the Footsteps of 'Grease'

+ 'Grease' made superstars out of Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta.

Although aimed at a younger audience, the two versions of High School Musical have been compared to 'Grease', the 1978 musical also set in a school. With the lead roles played by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, 'Grease' was hugely popular and became very famous, as did some of its songs such as 'Summer Nights' and 'You're The One That I Want'. Based on a theatre show from 1959, in 1982 a sequel was made, 'Grease 2', which was less successful.

The DVD will be released in the US on 11 December this year.
The show 'Grease' has just celebrated its first anniversary at the Teatre Victòria in Barcelona and has been seen by more than 343,000 people.
