> The Remodelling Project > Camp Nou and Kubala > Great Stadiums dilluns, 24 de setembre de 2007
Today, 24 September, marks the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of Camp Nou, FC Barcelona Stadium and the largest in Europe with seats for 98,918 spectators. The anniversary comes less than a week after the club's board of directors announced that the remodelling of the stadium would be undertaken by the prestigious English architect Norman Foster.
The proposal submitted by Foster + Partners beat plans put forward by the Catalan group of architects headed by Carles Ferrater. The two studios were the frontrunners amongst the finalists. An internationally renowned star architect, Norman Foster designed, amongst other projects, the Great Court at the British Museum, the Millau Viaduct (the highest bridge in the world), the Collserola Tower in Barcelona, the Palau de Congressos in Valencia, the new Wembley Stadium, the renovation work on the German parliament building, the Millennium Tower in Tokyo, and the St Mary Axe skyscraper in London (better known as 'The Gherkin'). The master strokes of the winning design could be seen last Saturday at the ground before the Barça-Sevilla match. The mock-up is now on show at the club's museum as part of the 'Fifty Years of the Blaugrana Beat' exhibition which follows the history of Camp Nou.
The Remodelling ProjectAlthough not yet definitive, Norman Foster's project retains the basic structure of Camp Nou with the asymmetry between the grandstand and the side areas. Modern and functional, the stadium will have an innovative external appearance (like the club's coat of arms, in the shape of a pot) and ten thousand additional seats, taking the total capacity to over 100,000 seats, all of which are covered. Work, set to start during the first half of 2009, is not expected to affect matches at the ground. The project will cost €250m.
Camp Nou and Kubala
+ With Kubala the club won four league titles.
Between 1922 and 1957 FC Barcelona played at the Les Corts ground, which had a capacity of 60,000. Towards the end of the 1940s, however, the increasing number of members and fans of the club and its growing sporting successes (league champions in 1948 and 1949) demonstrated the need to build a new stadium. This need became increasingly urgent thanks to the exceptional talent of Ladislau Kubala, the Hungarian player signed in 1950. With Kubala's arrival the club outgrew its Les Corts ground for good and led to the construction of Camp Nou, opened on 24 September 1957, designed by the architects Francesc Mitjans Miró and Josep Soteras Mauri.
Great Stadiums
+ Allianz Arena Stadium in Munich.
Apart from Camp Nou, there is a long list of other celebrated stadiums, be it on account of their size, structure or history. Here are some of them: Wembley, second-largest in Europe (with 90,000 seats), replacing the old stadium pulled down in 2003; Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, today with a capacity of 95,000 (although the decisive World Cup match in 1950 was watched by a crowd of 174,000); the 'futurist look' Allianz Arena in Munich; San Siro in Milan, shared by Inter and AC Milan; and Hampden Park, founded in 1903 and the national team's home ground.
