Fans of the Sims are delighted. The most popular video game in history is going from the video console to the cinema screen. That is, at least, what the US magazine 'Variety' said in a report published on 24 May 2007.
According to the showbiz publication, 20th Century Fox has acquired the screen rights to the Sims from Electronic Arts (EA), world leader in the computer-games industry. As regards the future of the film, 'Variety' did not provide details, saying only that it would involve real actors, that the script would be in the hands of Brian Lynch (scriptwriter for 'Scary Movie 3') and that it would be produced by John Davis (producer of 'Eragon' and 'Norbit'). Meanwhile, Electronic Arts is working on a new product: MySims, again inspired by characters from The Sims. MySims, which will be specifically aimed at Wii and Nintendo DS consoles, will be launched later this year, towards the autumn.
The World's Best-Selling Video Game
+ Computer game designer Will Wright.
Making its first appearance in 2000, The Sims is a simulation computer game devised by Will Wright who, in 1989, created SimCity, a game that involved designing and building a city. In 2002, The Sims overtook Myst (created in 1993) as the best-selling computer game with sales reaching nearly 85 million copies. A second, much more sophisticated version (Sims 2) appeared three years ago and a third is being developed, proof of the game's enormous popularity. Expansion packs have been produced for both versions.
A Virtual UniverseThe Sims features people-based characters called Sims, with certain needs to be met, both on a material as well as a social level. Players can create characters (giving them features and their own personality) and direct them through the game's virtual world. As opposed to other video games, The Sims does not have a specific objective except, if possible, that of attaining happiness for its characters. The game, therefore, recreates the real world, with adults who work and earn money, with children and youngsters who go to school, who have their own language, albeit one that does not make any sense: Simlish.
A World of PossibilitiesSims 2, better designed and with spectacular three-dimensional images, opened up new possibilities for the game. For example, the second version gave characters their own DNA, giving them physical and personality traits from their parents; they were capable of all manner of facial expressions, they were born, they grew up, they grew old and, eventually, they died; and they were given a purpose to their life which players had to choose when their characters became teenagers. Such as? One of the following: family, fortune, knowledge, popularity or romance.
