The Fight Against Doping

dijous, 29 de març de 2007
The sport of cycling is more than 100 years old and was one of the events included in the Athens Olympic Games in 1896. In fact it was during the 1890s that the sport really took off, although the first cycle races had taken place thirty years before.

The first race was held at Saint Cloud, near Paris, in 1868, with the following year seeing the first Paris-Rouen race. Fifty years earlier, in around 1817, the forerunner to the modern bicycle was invented.

At the turn of the 20th century there was a proliferation of velodromes accompanied by an improvement in roads which helped strengthen the sport. One-day races started to be held, such as Paris-Roubaix (1896) and Milan-Sanremo (1907), and stage races like the Tour de France: the most famous and oldest of all (first held in 1903), the Giro d'Italia (1909) and the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (1911).

Cycling is a sport that is practiced everywhere. It includes different disciplines such as road biking, mountain biking, descent biking, trial biking, track cycling, cyclo-cross and BMX. In fact, today sees the start of the world championships in one of these disciplines: the Track Cycling World Championships, held in Mallorca.

Track Cycling World Championships Palma 2007

+ The World Championships logo.
A total of 301 racers from 36 countries will take part in the Track Cycling World Championships, which run until 1 April, competing for medals in the different specialities. All eyes on the islands will be on the Mallorcan racer and six-times world champion, Joan Llaneras. The World Championships will inaugurate the brand new 5,000-seater Palma Arena velodrome. The opening ceremony will feature the Catalan theatre company, Fura dels Baus, acclaimed for its performance at the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Catalunya Team

+ The Catalunya Track Cycling Team.
One of the objectives of the Catalan sport is to achieve international recognition and so enable the country to compete internationally in its own right. Following a change in the rules by the International Cycling Federation (UCI), and with a view to competing alongside teams from all over the world (Germany, England, the United States, Spain, Italy, etc.), last year saw the birth of the Catalunya Track Cycling Team, composed of Catalan cyclists. Rather than a state selection, Catalunya Track Cycling Team is a private team, although this season it has already taken part in a number of international competitions including the European Championships and the World Cup held in Manchester (England).

The Fight Against Doping

+ The World Anti-Doping Agency was set up in 1999.
Doping is the administration of prohibited substances in order to increase physical performance. There have been a number of high-profile cases of doping in the world of cycling since the end of the 1990s, making it not a particularly recent problem. Neither is it restricted to cycling. In 1999 the World Anti-Doping Agency was set up. Four years later it produced its World Anti-Doping Code, a landmark in the fight against doping. Apart from testing, the fight against doping aims to educate people about the fact that the practice is unfair and contrary to fair play, which should preside over sporting competitions at all times.
