This weekend, the city of Las Vegas (Nevada, USA) will host North America's great basketball event, the All-Star Game. For three days (16-18 February) Las Vegas will bring together the best basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the world's most spectacular basketball league.

First held in 1951 in Boston (Massachusetts), the All-Star includes a number of competitions including the Rookie Challenge (a game played between newcomers and the best second-year players); the always-spectacular Slam Dunk Contest; the Three-Point Shootout featuring the sport's best long-range shooters; and the main event, the All-Star Game.

This year's Slam Dunk Contest will see the New York Knicks' Nate Robinson try to repeat his triumph of last year; and the winner of the 2006 Three-Point Shootout, the German player Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks, will also be trying to win the contest for a second consecutive year.

The All-Star game will be held on Sunday when the crème de la crème of the only mainstream sport to be invented in the United States takes to the court. Last year, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James, who will again play this year.

The All-Star Game

The NBA league includes 30 teams split over two conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. The All-Star Game is played between the best players from each conference, selected by popular vote whilst reserve players are chosen by coaches. The All-Star game has been played 55 times with 34 victories for the Eastern Conference against 21 for the Western Conference. In 2006, LeBron James (who had only just turned 21) became the youngest MVP in the sport's history.

Set up in 1946, the NBA is the best professional basketball league in the world. It wasn't until the end of the 1980s, however, that the All-Star became a world-wide event, owing largely to the extraordinary talent of players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, who is considered by many to be the greatest basketball player of all time. Nevertheless, despite its international dimension, North American basketball has lost the monopolising pre-eminence of former times. For example, the United States had to be content with a bronze medal in the 2006 World Championship in Japan, as it did at the Athens Olympics in 2004. That said, the US has, by far, the largest number of Olympic and World Championship medals to its name.

With 16 titles, the Boston Celtics is the leading team in the NBA, although the last was in 1986. The team dominated the NBA between 1957 and 1969 winning nine titles. The Celtics are closely followed by the Los Angeles Lakers (14-time champions) and, further down the list, by the Chicago Bulls (with six NBA championships). With three champions to their credit are the Detroit Pistons, the Golden State Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and the San Antonio Spurs, followed by twice-winners the Houston Rockets and the New York Knicks. Eight teams have won the NBA once including reigning champions the Miami Heat.
