> New Features on Windows Vista > The Rivals: Linux and Mac OS X > The Battle of the Web Browsers dimarts, 30 de gener de 2007
Today, 30 January, is the day chosen by Microsoft to officially launch Windows Vista, the new operating system from the US company chaired by Bill Gates. The new operating system available to companies since 30 November last year is now available to home users.
The brand new system, being released at the same time as Office 2007, is two years late. Windows Vista replaces Windows XP, which has been on the market since October 2001. Microsoft's new operating system is available in various languages with the Catalan version expected to be ready at the beginning of April. Vista will also be available in Basque and Galician, although this is not likely to be until nearer the summer. Broadly speaking, Windows Vista can be installed on new computers and on PCs with a one gigabyte memory (or computers that are about 18 months' old), although requirements vary according to which of the five available versions is selected. New Features on Windows VistaThe five versions of Vista are Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate and Enterprise. Apart from the specific features of each version, Microsoft says the new system has a lot of improvements, such as a more sophisticated and attractive design, and a faster and more powerful search facility where users can search for key words within a document and not just by document name. Another feature is the improvement in security, an aspect that had been criticised by Windows XP users.
The Rivals: Linux and Mac OS XWindows, installed in nine out of every ten new computers, dominates the operating system market with little room left for rivals. However, there are actually a great number of operating systems. Two of the most important are the elegantly designed and interactive Mac OS X, specific to Macintosh computers made by the US company Apple, and a system developed by users all over the world called Linux, the most popular of the free Open Source operating systems. Another feature of Linux lies in the fact that it can be freely modified.
The Battle of the Web Browsers
+ Internet Explorer has a powerful rival in Firefox.
Windows Vista incorporates the latest version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, the most popular web browser among surfers. However, Internet Explorer has a powerful rival in Firefox, an Open Source browser which has recently experienced remarkable growth. According to data collected by Net Applications for December 2006, Internet Explorer had almost 80% of the market followed by Firefox (with 14%) and Apple's Safari (4.24%) with the remainder being accounted for by browsers such as Opera and Netscape.
