The Only Cup Barça Have Yet to Win

Track Record

Football in Japan

dimarts, 12 de desembre de 2006
Riding high after their victory against Werder Bremen in the Champions League, FC Barcelona will this week have the chance to win the only cup currently missing from their trophy cabinet: the FIFA Club World Cup, the final of which will be played on 17 December.

The Club World Cup, the most important club tournament in the footballing world, will take place in Japan, bringing together all the reigning champions from six continents or subcontinents: Africa; Central America, North America and the Caribbean; South America; Asia; Europe; and Oceania, with the respective teams being Al Ahly Sporting Club (Egypt), Club America (Mexico), Sport Club Internacional of Porto Alegre (Brazil), Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (Republic of Korea), FC Barcelona and Auckland City (New Zeland).

Although the tournament started on Sunday 10 December with the quarter finals, Barça won't be playing until Thursday when it will play against Club America. The other semi-final will be between Al Ahly Sporting Club and Sport Club Internacional of Porto Alegre which, along with the Catalan club, are favourites to win the competition.

The predecessor of the Club World Cup (also known as the Toyota Cup) was the Intercontinental Cup which was held between 1960 and 2004 between club champions from the two most football-fanatic areas in the world: Europe and South America.

The Only Cup Barça Have Yet to Win

+ Ronaldinho is full of confidence.
Although it has many cups to its name on a European level (the Champions League, the European Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup), Barcelona have never lifted the FIFA Club World Cup. In fact, the team have only once qualified for the Intercontinental Cup after becoming European champions in 1992. The Catalan club lost 2-1 to Sao Paulo, the South American champions that year. Sao Paulo also happen to be the reigning Club World Cup champions after beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final in December 2005.

Track Record

+ Sao Paulo won the Club World Cup in 2005.
A total of 26 clubs have won the Club World Cup to date, 14 from South America and 12 from Europe. Six clubs have won the competition three times: Boca Juniors, AC Milan, Club Nacional de Football (Montevideo), Club Atletico Penarol (Montevideo), Real Madrid and Sao Paulo. With two titles are Ajax (Amsterdam), Bayern Munich, Independiente (Avellaneda), Inter (Milan), Juventus, Porto and Santos. Other clubs features on the select list of winners include Flamengo, Manchester United and River Plate.

Football in Japan

+ The Japanese league started in 1993.
Japan, this year's hosts for the Club World Cup, doesn't have a strong footballing tradition despite the British having introduced the game very early on, in 1873. However recently, interest in the sport has risen sharply for various reasons including the success of the J. League (the Japanese league) started in 1993, which has attracted a number of internationally renowned players; the 2002 World Cup, held in Japan and South Korea; the 'stamp of approval' from the Brazilian Zico, one of the greats from the 1980s, who agreed to manage the team between 2002 and 2006; and the presence of many Japanese players who have been signed up by European clubs.

QUE HO SABIES?

  • We have already mentioned that Santos appears in the list of previous winners of the Cup, winning the competition in 1962 and 1963. Playing a key role in securing these victories was Pelé (also known as 'O Rei'-The King), considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all times.
  • Internacional of Porto Alegre, who are among this year's participating teams, are staunch rivals of Gremio Porto Alegrense, Ronaldinho's first club. The Barça star's old club won the Intercontinental Cup in 1983.
