> Life Inseparable From Work > The Ninth Symphony > 'Ode to Joy': European Anthem dijous, 19 d'octubre de 2006
This Friday, 20 October, sees the premiere of 'Copying Beethoven', a feature film about the last years in the life of the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, considered to be the forerunner of Romanticism in music and a key figure in the history of classical music. The film, which lasts nearly two hours, has been dubbed into Catalan.
The story begins in 1824. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is about to receive its first performance but it isn't completely ready yet. Beethoven urgently needs a copyist who will transcribe the score. Almost by accident, Anna Holtz, a young student at the Vienna Conservatory who hopes to find a niche as a composer, has the opportunity to work with the great musical genius of the day. Anna manages to overcome the initial scepticism of the composer, who is irritable and fickle by nature, and the two establish a deep professional and affectionate relationship. The cast of 'Copying Beethoven' is headed by Ed Harris, who gives an outstanding performance in the role of Beethoven, and Diane Kruger, who plays the part of the fictitious Anna Holtz. The film, which received critical acclaim at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, is directed by the Polish director Agnieszka Holland, who shot to worldwide fame after directing 'Europa, Europa' in 1991.
Life Inseparable From WorkThey say that an artist's work is inseparable from their life, something that particularly stands out in the case of Beethoven. Born into a musical family in Bonn in 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven's musical gifts soon became apparent, especially as a pianist and he was sought-after amongst music-loving aristocrats. But towards the end of the 1790s signs of deafness started to appear and Beethoven ended up completely deaf. As a result, he shut himself away and dedicated himself entirely to composing, creating some of the most remarkable works in the history of western classical music.
The Ninth Symphony
+ The Ninth Symphony is a universal symbol of joy, freedom and fraternity.
Beethoven's most celebrated work is his Ninth Symphony, a universal symbol of joy, freedom and fraternity. After having spent two years working on the symphony, Beethoven conducted the first performance on 7 May 1824 to a packed Kärntnerthor Theatre in Vienna. At the end of the performance the composer, who by that time could hardly hear at all, stood staring at the orchestra until the mezzo-soprano Caroline Unger turned him towards the audience who were applauding ecstatically, with an enthusiasm never seen before.
'Ode to Joy': European Anthem
+ The 'Ode to Joy' is the European Anthem.
The Ninth Symphony is also known as the 'Choral' as it was the first time Beethoven had included voices in his symphonies. The choir makes its appearance in the last movement which overflows with emotion and expressiveness singing, known the world over as the 'Ode to Joy' using words by the German poet Friedrich von Schiller. The 'Ode to Joy' has been the official European Anthem since 1985.
