Tomorrow, 9 June, sees the start of the world's great sporting event this year: the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Thirty two teams will compete for the prized trophy but only one will be able to taste glory. Which one? On 9 July, a month away, we'll know for sure.
The opening match will be played in Munich, the Bavarian capital, between Germany and Costa Rica. The venue will be the brand new Allianz Arena stadium with a capacity of 60,000 spectators and the home ground of Bayern Munich, the most famous team in German football. The final itself will be played in the German capital, Berlin, at the Olympiastadion, site of the 1936 Olympic Games. But there are quite a few more cities which are hosting World Cup matches, 12 in total, including Cologne, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig and Stuttgart. This fits in well with the federal tradition of the country, the most populated in the European Union, with a population of some 82.5 m. Another point to note is that Germany also hosted the 1974 World Cup, which it won, and that this great footballing event -which is played every four years- first took place in 1930 with this year's competition being the 18th World Cup.
The CompetitionThe competition is organised as follows: thirty two teams make up eight groups with four teams in each group. Two from each group will go on to the second round when the competition turns into a knockout all the way to the final. As for favourite teams, everyone says of course that their own team is their favourite, although, for the way they play or for their footballing tradition, some teams are talked about more than others: Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy, England…
Star PlayersThe World Cup, followed by millions of fans throughout the world, is a great showcase for players, an event which brings together football's 'crème de la crème'. Some of the names taking part in this year's Word Cup are Ronaldinho, the main player in a team with extraordinary players including Ronaldo, Kaká and Adriano; Henry and Zidane, the backbone of the French team; Messi, the great hope for Argentinean fans along with Riquelme; and there is also England's Rooney, the German Ballack and the Italian Totti, Shevchenko from Ukraine and the Portuguese Deco...
Track RecordWinning the World Cup is an achievement which only seven national teams have managed. Apart from England and France which have only won it once, all the others have won the World Cup more than once. Brazil heads the ranking with five wins, the last of which was in 2002, after beating Germany 2-0 in the final. Germany and Italy have each won three times with Argentina and Uruguay winning twice. Out of the seven former winners, only Uruguay will not play in the World Cup 2006 in Germany.
