> Several of Our Own Racers > The Catalunya and Ricard Tormo Circuits > A Sport that Goes Back a Century dissabte, 25 de març de 2006
This coming Sunday, the 26th of March, sees the start of the World Motorcycle Championship, one of the greatest motorsports events of the calendar, along with Formula 1. The setting: the circuit at Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz, Andalusia).
The Jerez race is the first of seventeen races to be held in different circuits around the world, in a competition that lasts until 29th October. On that day (or even sooner) we will know the names of the world champions in the Moto GP, 250 and 125 cc categories. The Moto GP category, which has the highest cylinder capacity, is the most popular among motorcycling fans,–and even more so this year. The champion of the last five years, the Italian Valentino Rossi, has a new rival in the Catalan Dani Pedrosa, three-times world champion who is about to debut in the top category. Another Catalan, Sete Gibernau, is also among the favourites to carry off the Moto GP World Championship trophy (all three are riding different bikes: Rossi, a Yamaha; Pedrosa, a Honda; and Gibernau, a Ducati).
Several of Our Own RacersIn fact, there is a remarkable number of our own racers at the 2006 World Championship. In the Moto GP competition, there are four: Sete Gibernau, Dani Pedrosa, Toni Elías (Honda) and Carles Checa (Yamaha). In the 250cc category, there are another four, while in the 125 there are even more, a total of seven. All in all, there are strong reasons to be optimistic.
The Catalunya and Ricard Tormo CircuitsOf the seventeen Motorcycle Championship events of 2006, two will be held in our country; one at the Circuit de Catalunya, located in the districts of Montmeló and Granollers, in the county of Vallès Oriental. It has three different courses and also serves as the venue of one of the major Formula 1 events. The other will be at the Circuit Ricard Tormo at Xest, in the county of Foia de Bunyol. This circuit has been designed along the architectural lines of American circuits.
A Sport that Goes Back a CenturyThese two top-level circuits and the strong presence of racers from this country in the World Championship are part and parcel of the motorcycling tradition here, where interest in the sport started around 1910. Motorcycling had started life in England a few years before at the turn of the century, and in 1907 the first Tourist Trophy was held on the Isle of Man. This race is still held today. In 1904, the International Motorcycling Federation was founded, a governing body that (as well as circuit racing) also covers sports such as motocross, trial, and Enduro.
