From the 20th January to the 10th February the African Nations Cup is to be held in Egypt. This is the sports event that generates most interest throughout the African continent. The competition dates from 1957 and is held bi-annually. It can now provide us with a reason to discuss African football.
Firstly, we should point out that although we shall be looking mostly at men's football, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that women's football has undergone constant progression in recent times, both in the professional sphere and in the number of amateur players and fans. The African Nations Cup will give an insight into the level of football being played in Africa and glimpse of the chances held by African sides taking part in the World Cup Germany 2006. The good show put on by some of the African teams in recent world championships and the increasingly important role of African players in the major European leagues mean that interest in African football is growing. In four years time, African football will also host a challenging event: the World Cup South Africa 2010, when the country will become the first nation in Africa to host a football world cup.
The 2006 Nations Cup
+ The African Nations Cup is to be held in Egypt.
If we are to take heed of the results of the qualifiers for Germany 2006, this year the African Nations Cup will be more competitive than ever. Of the most notable sides of the last few years (Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia), only one will be in the World Cup this year: Tunisia, the current holder of the African Nations Cup. But Tunisia will be going to Germany along with Angola, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Togo, until now considered much more modest sides. This is proof of the equality in African footballing standards and may be indicative of a thrilling Nations Cup.
Teams and NicknamesUnlike European national sides that are identified by the country name and, at most, the colour of their kit, African sides are also given nicknames that are deeply rooted and more or less related to some aspect of the nation that they represent. We find, for example, that the Cameroon players are the indomitable lions; those of Ivory Coast, the elephants; those of Egypt, the pharaohs; those of Morocco, the Atlas lions; those of Tunisia, the Carthage eagles; those of Ghana, the black stars...
Samuel Eto'o, the Best African Footballer
+ FC Barcelona and Cameroon player Samuel Eto'o.
The FC Barcelona and Cameroon player Samuel Eto'o is an indisputable great in African and world football, as can be seen from the awards he has received over the last few seasons. This incredibly fast striker has been named by FIFA the third best player in the world and he also aspires to be proclaimed best African player, a distinction that he has achieved in the last two years. His main rivals for this award are Didier Drogba and Michael Essien, who both play for Chelsea.
