According to a report recently published by Softcatalà, an organisation working to encourage the use of Catalan in new technologies, the presence of the Catalan language on the internet has doubled over the last two years. The report, which bears the title 'La salut del català a internet el 2005' (The Health of the Catalan Language on the Internet in 2005), takes as its initial reference point another report published in 2003, also by Softcatalà.
In effect, 'The Health of the Catalan Language on the Internet in 2005' concludes that in less than two years, the number of websites in Catalan has gone up from 2,926,550 to 7,140,000, which places the Catalan language at number twenty-six in the worldwide web ranking. One of the most important contributing factors in this increase is the popularisation of blogs in Catalan (blogs are a kind of personal diary open to participation from readers). It must also be acknowledged that the increased presence of Catalan on the web can partly be explained by the fact that today's search engines can index many more pages than they did two years ago; which leads us to discuss the method employed by Softcatalà. For this research project, Softcatalà used the Google database, the most powerful search engine on the internet. It has, then, overlooked other search engines and alternative pages such as e-mail, chats and instant messaging, which are more difficult to gauge.
Ranking
+ The report by Softcatalà mentions the presence on the internet of over thirty languages.
The report by Softcatalà mentions the presence on the internet of over thirty languages. The ranking is headed, needless to say, by English, with 9,200,000,000 pages on Google, followed at great distance by French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, and so on. Softcatalà also provides data in relative terms, in other words, in relation to the number of speakers, with a list also headed by English, but which underlines the high position attained by the Nordic languages: Icelandic, Estonian, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish. In this list, Catalan goes up to nineteenth place, above languages such as Greek, Polish, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic and Chinese.
Internet UsersAs regards the number of internet users, research highlights what is known as the 'digital divide', which we could define as the observable differences in access to new technologies, to a great degree resulting from differing levels of socio-economic development. For example, according to the Internet World Stats database, in the European Union, the percentage of the population that uses the internet is around 49%, and in North America it surpasses 68%, whilst in Africa it doesn't reach 3%. The digital divide is also present within the West, with notable differences between countries and among citizens of a single country.
Websites and the Use of Catalan
+ WICCAC gauges the presence of Catalan on the websites of companies and organisations.
The presence of Catalan on the websites of companies and organisations located and present in Catalan-speaking areas is approaching 50%, according to the latest calculations by WICCAC, the acronym for Webmàsters Independents en Catalá, de Cultura i d'Àmbits Cívics (Independent Webmasters in Catalan for Culture and Civic Issues). However, there are clear differences in the degree of penetration of Catalan from one sector to another. For example, it is very high in the University sphere and in the fields of theatre and dance, wine and champagne, but very low in multinationals and the automotive sector.
