It is a year now since Google launched its free e-mail service, known as Gmail, with one gigabyte inboxes, much more than had been provided up till then by its competitors. The anniversary of this launch is as good a reason as any to discuss the internet's leading search engine.
But before we do, it would be a good idea to take a quick look at the history of this North-American company, headquartered at Silicon Valley (California, USA), the cradle of the internet and of many of the most important technology firms in the US. Although Google Inc. was not actually born until 1998, the company's history goes back to 1995, when two programmers, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, then aged 24 and 23 respectively, met at Stanford University in California. Soon after, Page and Brin were putting their energy into the creation of an algorithm (a method of calculus) for searching for data and in 1996 they began to develop the BackRub search engine, the precursor to Google. Finally, in the summer of 1998, the Google company was officially born. It was initially located in a garage with just four employees. But these were the beginnings of a company that today enjoys enormous influence and growth.
From Googol to Google
+ Googol refers to the number represented by the digit 1 followed by 100 zeros.
Googol is the term that refers to a huge number represented as 1 followed by 100 zeros. The term was coined in 1938 when the North-American mathematician Edward Kasner asked his nephew Milton Sirotta, aged nine, what name he would like to give the number. So, from the term invented by Sirotta and with a bit of word-play, in 1997 the word 'google' was born. The origin of the term is linked to Google's objective of organising all the information available on the internet.
The Search Engine, in FiguresThe Google search engine has a list of more than 8,000 million websites (in 1998, the number of listed sites was 25 million) and over 1,000 million images, including photographs, drawings, tables, etc. It also allows one to limit one's search to one of over thirty languages, including Catalan. The interface (the search engine's home page, to put it one way) can be accessed in over one hundred languages. These figures back up Google's position as the leading search engine.
Google's Services and Tools
+ Google Desktop Search allows one to search in your computer.
Since its creation in 1998, Google has incorporated various search services, such as Google Video and Google News, with the latest published news items classified by subject and totally up to the minute (this service is also offered by Yahoo! and Microsoft, through Yahoo! News and MSNBC News, respectively); it has also developed a range of tools, such as translation of texts and web pages and the Google Desktop Search, which allows one to search for files and documents stored in your computer.
