On Friday, ABC newspaper explicitly asked the Spanish Government to dissolve the Catalan National Assembly (ANC). In an editorial, titled ‘Dissolve the Catalan National Assembly Now‘, the paper referred to the 2014-2015 road map which anticipates a declaration of independence on April 23, 2015, and asked for the group’s leaders to be prosecuted. Saturday evening, an enormous wave of tweets appeared on Twitter with the hashtag #TotsSomAssembleaNC [We are all the Catalan National Assembly] standing together with the members of the ANC and making the hashtag become a worldwide trending topic.
The ABC said: ‘We are talking about a seditious coup, without nuances or euphemisms, from which the Generalitat [Catalan Government] needs to distance itself immediately. Since it’s unlikely that that will happen, it is the responsibility of other state authorities to strongly respond to this latest challenge, by asking the courts to immediately dissolve this network which already has a date and procedure set to subvert the constitutional order.’
And it insists: ‘Everything has a limit, and if there are already specific plans for sedition they must be stopped without delay. The state attorney general and prosecutor must undertake the pertinent actions to bring the promoters of this foolish and dangerous project before a judge.’
A few months ago, the newspaper published defamatory material against the ANC, accusing it of having ‘pro-ETA ties’.
The Catalan National Assembly is the association of volunteers that organized the Catalan Way last September 11, 2013 in which more than 1.6 million people (out of population of 7.5 million) joined hands from one end of Catalonia to the other, a distance of some 250 miles.
